E-Journal #5 - EXHIBITION TITLE AND POSTCARD

Your 100-200 response to this post should include 1) an indication of whether or not you think an exhibition title is appropriate and why (other than, Senior Exhibition 2011) and, if you are inclined toward using a title, provide a list of some possible title options, 2) a list of possible types of imagery to use on the postcard and/or design ideas and an indication of why you feel these designs or images would be appropriate.

As you know, you can each create a new post by logging in and hitting "New Post".  If you would like to upload imagery or mock-ups of designs, you may do so in that manner (it is not possible to post an image to a comment thread, but you CAN post a link if you like - for instance, a link back to a post you've made on this blog).

I encourage you to use this blog as a venue for commenting back and forth on design mock-ups either through commenting or by creating new posts.  Remember, although Jen is the head of the Design Committee, it is everyone's responsibility to contribute to the creation of the postcard/poster/flyer.

  1. I wasn't in class when the postcard was discussed so I am unsure what other student's takes are on the title and image for the senior show. I did a little bit of research and found that many senior exhibitions stick with the name 'Senior Exhibition', or make it more specific by adding 'painting', 'design', 'sculpture' or some other descriptive word to clarify what the exhibition contains. It is difficult with our show because we are not all dealing with the same media or topic, though we are all dealing with issues pertaining to the self or things that affect us personally. I think it may be more appropriate in our case to stick to naming the show Senior Exhibition 2011, it identifies us as student artists showcasing our series as part of our curriculum. As far as imagery is concerned I like the idea of splices that Jen posted on the blog, but I don't know how well our pieces work together, perhaps there is some other way of incorporating each of us in the splices. What did we discuss in class?

Here is a link to an interesting exhibition in Arizona and I think an extremely effective site. http://arizonastatevcd.com/2010/

  2. 1) I'm not apposed to a title for the show, but haven't thought of anything that would suit our work as a collective body... I agree with Sio that it is hard to find a label since our materials are scattered all over the place... I also agree with the idea that Senior Exhibition 2011 is appropriate in that it represents us and where we are at in our artistic careers.

    2) I was thinking about the photo idea and was trying to find a justification for taking a photo of us... reflected in a mirror.. taken from behind. I didn't just want it to be that; there had to be some meaning behind it (for me at least)....... what I came up with is that all our work has to do with self reflection and issues pertinent to us as individuals, so the mirror can be a representation of this self reflection, and looking at ourselves from different perspectives.
I also think that the splice idea could work... but am concerned with the work standing next to one another (colors would have to be the same? or within the same tonal range?)... maybe its just an issue with order at this point... maybe use smaller splices?

  3. I think show titles work best when all of the art work has connecting themes. Sio brought up the fact that all of our work is very personal and tied to ideas of our issues, and while we all have some common elements I have not been able to come up with a good, solid show title that really covers all of our work. I also like Jenn's idea about the title Senior Exhibition 2011 representing where we are in our lives and careers.

My thoughts about using a single photograph as the postcard was that we would all be represented and it would look clean. Not only would it be clean but I thought it covered in a kind of simple way about the underlining themes in all of our work, identity, self reflection, along those lines. I like what Jenn did with the splice postcard and the work looked a lot better than I thought it would look all together like that. However I think it still looks crowded and.. not messy..but almost distracting(?). I'm totally open to going through the order and playing around with that and the different colors and seeing what that looks like. I also had an idea to put one work from each of us onto individual postcards. So one postcard would have one picture on it and there would be a selection and every postcard would be different. Not sure what that would do to cost or if it would even keep us together as an exhibition, I'm just messing with ideas.

  4. Like the others, I feel that the best way to unify our work is to keep the standard "Senior Exhibition 2011" title. We're all working in very different mediums/ideas and there is no strong common theme (aside from ourselves, of course). I mean, most, if not all of our work is autobiographical, but I can't think of a title which expresses that.

I really like the idea of us standing in front of the mirror, as well as the symbolism attached to this. Our journey through college was a way of finding ourselves both in life and in our art, and so I think it is important to express this through our design. I also mentioned possibly using a sunburst, if we're still tossing around the idea of using image splicing. Not only does it represent our college and what it stands for, but also truth and hope... and the idea of a sunrise/sunset as the end of one journey and the beginning of a brand new one upon graduation. Not to mention it also looks rather energetic and cool. :) If the mix of color palettes is an issue, we could play with hue and saturation for each image. These are just little ideas.

  5. After looking at some of the other posts, I see that everyone seems to gravitate towards "Senior Exhibition 2011". Even though we all have different ideas/mediums, I'm sure we all have something in common and having an orignal title would be nice. Maybe: "Looking Within" or something dealing with a mirror since all our works are very close to ourselves. Senior Exhibition 2011 seems too plain, but it can be a sub-title.

I was a little weary about the photograph but after reading Jen's explanation, I'm kind of leaning towards the idea. It would be cleaner than the splices of art. Once we have a photo, I'll have a better idea. If the photo doesn't work out well, then we can simply but a mirror or some other object representing this idea of self-reflection since that's the only unifying theme.

  6. I think a title is not a bad option, but it is not necessary. We are all working with art that is a reflection of ourselves in some way. For example titles can be “We Are” or vaguer like one word titles that mean something to our group. We could also play off the fact that our mediums are all so different “What is Art” or better yet “This Is Art.” A question we have all been asked multiple times since we started this program. But a title can be used to catch people’s eye/ attention. If it is interesting enough they will remember it, and want to come to the show more.
As for design I do like the strips, but if we are afraid they do not look unison we can do a color tone, saturation over the images like everyone has said. If we are sending these invites to people who are not big in the art world having images of our stuff might help more people come. Visuals are nice and also show our different mediums. But I do not see anything wrong with our images being in huge contrast from another because it shows how diverse the show will be. Just how we layout the splices might make a difference.
Or if we wanted to stick with the images of us.. We could do something like the link below, but instead of where the man is place ourselves in each section. We could all be facing forward, or some poking around the corners, or our backs facing the viewer.

Our graduation year is also 7/11 (high school and college) so it might be fun to do something that plays off the 7 eleven logo or saying. For those who do not know 7 eleven is a gas station. There are also 7 of us and the year is 11’. So it fits pretty well. Plus a play off a gas station for a fine arts museum is pretty awesome and fits our groups thoughts on art is art if that is what we intended it to be, and no one else should be the judge. Or not even the gas station but 7/11 works title wise.

All of us could be facing a white wall and throwing buckets of paint on it. The paint could be spelling out the copy/text. Or it could be our individual splices of our work to keep up with the mock-up already made, but adding some more excitement. Like Sio said a way to incorporate us.

But I will draw mock-ups tonight and post them if that helps us visually. Or just when we meet for our group picture I can bring some. Also you know how there are “Rollins Cares about..” signs all around campus? We need to do this for our art exhibition!

  7. 1) I think a title makes the card more personal. It gives the viewer something to look forward too, and is somewhat of an introduction. I think that all of us have worked hard and owe it to ourselves and our work to provide a title that is unique to the seven of us. It also makes the card more formal.

    2) I really like the mirror idea as well, because all of our pieces represent something that is personal to us. Looking in the mirror shows this idea of self reflection and contemplation about our lives. I was thinking about everyones individual pieces and the main content for each and what images come to mind. I gathered images on the web that I thought represent each individual's idea. My images contain an individual flower (Maggie, the idea of life and reality), a secret door (me, door to my life), a hand holding a route (Jen, this idea of nurture and you heritage), a brightly colored dream world picture (Lauren, this idea of waking up from a dream), a shutter speed road picture (Diego, the idea of time flying by) A picture of a room covered in dots (Sio, this idea of obsession- not in a bad way, love you) and for Caitlin a picture of feet trying to balance on a rope, representing the difficulties life throws us, being stuck. I don't know how to post my mock up on here so I will print it out.
