On the Topic of Artist Statements...

 ...below is a link to an article from the blog Conscientious that I think you may all find helpful.  Although it speaks about photography, the advice is applicable for any medium.

In the post, Colberg writes "Part of the reason why you want to write a statement is not because you have to, but because you want to own and have an understanding of your work. You want to know how to approach it, and you want to be certain that it’s done, that there’s nothing you need to add to it.

It’s very important to understand that this has nothing to do with an academic approach to art (another one of those oh-so convenient excuses not to write one). It is true that an academic approach to art employs writing, but that doesn’t mean that every piece of writing about art is academic.
