E-Journal #10: Why Study Art?

Post a 100-200 word response to question posed above.  Reflect on what originally prompted you to pursue a degree in Studio Art and relate that back to how you feel having (almost) completed your degree.  Is studying art meaningful?  How so?  Now is your chance to really let it all out!

On the Topic of Artist Statements...

...below is a link to an article from the blog Conscientious that I think you may all find helpful.  Although it speaks about photography, the advice is applicable for any medium.

In the post, Colberg writes "Part of the reason why you want to write a statement is not because you have to, but because you want to own and have an understanding of your work. You want to know how to approach it, and you want to be certain that it’s done, that there’s nothing you need to add to it.

It’s very important to understand that this has nothing to do with an academic approach to art (another one of those oh-so convenient excuses not to write one). It is true that an academic approach to art employs writing, but that doesn’t mean that every piece of writing about art is academic.

Post the links to your full text PDFs here, please!

Regarding Walter Benjamin....

...and our discussion today.  Two things I just came across that I think you all might be interested in.

1.  Christian Marclay's "The Clock", a 24-hour video piece currently on view at Paula Cooper in New York where he mixes thousands of snippets from films depicting the passage of time -- every minute of the day.  Click HERE to read a brief Jerry Saltz interview.

2.  Google's launch of "Art Project" - this brings the artwork to YOU in a truly digital manner.  Click HERE to read about it on Hyperallergic, and click HERE to visit the site.

E-Journal #5 - EXHIBITION TITLE AND POSTCARD

Your 100-200 response to this post should include 1) an indication of whether or not you think an exhibition title is appropriate and why (other than, Senior Exhibition 2011) and, if you are inclined toward using a title, provide a list of some possible title options, 2) a list of possible types of imagery to use on the postcard and/or design ideas and an indication of why you feel these designs or images would be appropriate.

As you know, you can each create a new post by logging in and hitting "New Post".  If you would like to upload imagery or mock-ups of designs, you may do so in that manner (it is not possible to post an image to a comment thread, but you CAN post a link if you like - for instance, a link back to a post you've made on this blog).

I encourage you to use this blog as a venue for commenting back and forth on design mock-ups either through commenting or by creating new posts.  Remember, although Jen is the head of the Design Committee, it is everyone's responsibility to contribute to the creation of the postcard/poster/flyer.

OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE YOUR WORK PUBLISHED!!

COMPETITION TO DESIGN A COVER FOR THE BRITISH JOURNAL OF AESTHETICS

The British Journal of Aesthetics (BJA) is holding a competition open to students on full-time undergraduate or graduate courses at art schools in any country to design a cover for the journal, which is published by Oxford University Press (OUP), both in print and online. A new overall cover design was introduced last year, including an image, generally a black & white photograph of a sculpture or a detail from a print. It will normally but not necessarily be a monochrome image. The covers of three recent issues can be found here, as well as the winner of last year’s competition. Entries to the competition will consist in a .jpeg or .tiff containing an image (henceforth, the “image”), and a cover design incorporating the image (henceforth, the “design”), which can be assembled using a template that can be downloaded here (the template is available in InDesign, Illustrator, Quark and Photoshop). The resolution of the image must be at least 300dpi. There is no restriction on the use of colour. The winning entry will showcase the distinctive style of the artist, while remaining consistent with the series of covers as a whole.

E-Journal #4: Life After Graduation

Read the ART21 Blog posting, Life After Graduation from last April and look over the website of current graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill, Lee Delegard.  Lee was one of my students at Beloit College, which has a studio art curriculum very similar to Rollins.  The Way Things Are includes installation views of the works that Lee produced for her senior exhibition.  I encourage you to look at her more current work as well, in order to get a sense of how her work has progressed.

After reading and looking over these materials, provide a 100-200 word response detailing your reaction to both.

E-Journal #3, Managing Your Studio Time

How do you plan to manage your studio time between now and March 14th?  Your response should include 1) a detailed account of realistic goals in terms of progress you intend to make each week on the physical artworks, 2) a discussion of what activities you consider to be "in the studio" in addition to physically crafting works in the space of the studio (either home or school studio) such as prepping materials, sitting with the work while crafting drafts of your artist statement, referencing and consulting research materials in the form of books or essays to help you focus the form and content of your artwork, editing or sorting materials, etc.

David Wojnarowicz Statement: Barry Blinderman

In light of yesterday's conversation, I thought you all would find this statement about the work of Wojnarowicz insightful.  It's written by the curator of the University Galleries at Illinois State University, Barry Blinderman.  As you'll note from the link, Barry also curated the traveling museum retrospective, David Wojnaworicz:  Tongues of Flame in 1990.

E-Journal #2: Influence and Reference

Find an artist(s) whose work is closely related to your own.  Read their statements and/or catalog essays (often you can find links to catalog essays within the artist's bio or resume either on their own website or their gallery's).  How are the ideas behind their work described and discussed?  Which ideas are pertinent to your own work?  Why?

Provide at least one link to a page or site that includes both visual and written documentation of the artist's work.
