I loved this. The text with the visuals (which were mostly text too) was intriguing. Made me want to keep reading more, that and what was being said seemed so true to me. It reminded me of a recent discussion in class where we said none of us would ever have an original idea. It would just be taking something in a different direction or the next level. I also found it interesting how he used a quote from the bible. Using a religious reference, but in a way that everyone could understand and not be turned off from. Then genetics, and not picking your family came from nowhere to me. But the point here is you can choose everything else. You can choose the influences and things that make up your life. He emphasis how important reading is. It made me realize I need to start doing more because I think he is right.
ReplyDeleteThe next step was to not wait to know who you are before you create, but start creating to find out who you are. Next is writing the book you want to read. Make your life one you will want to live, because we decide! We like to be artists so be one, but make good work before people see it. He ends with being boring, and tools to be successful. I think this is a really interesting piece of writing to sum up on how to be an artist.
hahaha, this blog is really is fun to read... but at the same time a dose of reality. I agree completely with caitlin in that there is a good balance of visuals and text that keep the audience amused and interested...
ReplyDelete* make things= know thy self
* fake it til you make it
* nothing is original
* use you hands
** side projects and hobbies are important
* do good work, then put it where people can see it
these are just a couple of the short ideas that Kloen shared and i enjoyed... and as much as i would like to argue and say its not true, I think im beginning to come around. I think at first, no artist like the idea that "nothing is original", but that is definitely the reality we live in... at least the vast majority of ideas aren't original.. i think a certain amount of originality still has to exist and to crate interesting variations.. can you not be original is altering a pre-existing idea?
I also really enjoyed the idea "make things= know thy self"... i have always said that art is so imperative to me because its almost a form of therapy... self discovery. art has allowed me to reflect on what's important to me and why certain things interest me. The more time i commit to my art, the more i feel like i have a stronger understanding of myself (my current project has been especially insightful and how i feel about myself).
Lastly, i also completely agree with the idea that side projects and hobbies are important. side projects are a way to discover topics of interest and predict a potential longevity on a specific idea. side projects can turn into main focuses quite easily... as for hobbies, again, i think they only add substance to an artist's work... it keeps them aware of topics outside of their own focus.
I really liked this article. It was interesting how the writer was constantly referencing quotes and pop culture. These references emphasize his point that artists steal. He took the ideas of others and combined them into this article. We are all products of our influences. He writes like someone talking to me and never gets to philosophical or abstrat. He writes in a more matter of fact kind of way.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite two points were "making things you like" and "hobbies are important". When deciding on what to do, it's easy to forget my inspirations and why I decided to be an artist. Working on stuff you like makes me more connected to the work. The second point is connected since hobbies are things you like to do. If you want to know about yourself, then look at your hobbies and side projects. Your side projects is almost your sub concious telling you something.
I couldn't help but occasionally laugh out loud while reading through this blog post. It was encouraging to read this post and realize that real people are still out there. Having been at Rollins for four years it sometimes escapes my mind that there is a whole world out there. The world really is just a small town and everyone should be treated that way, everyone in some way knows everyone--so do what you love and put it out there for people to see because word spreads like wildfire. I liked the bit about surrounding yourself by things you really love and completely immersing yourself in those things. I do this everyday with dogs. I see a dog and I ask to pet it, I check pet rescue sites when I wake up in the morning, when I get bored during the day and before I go to sleep at night. I read, watch, and listen to everything DOG. And that's how it should be, regardless of what you love. This blog post was really interesting to read, it was both highly informational and humorous at the same time.
ReplyDeleteWOW I just lost my whole post. Thank you technology. Here we go again..
ReplyDeleteI steal and I was taught to do so at a young age by my mother. And I seriously can't stop stealing. I steal little things, big things, tangible things and ideas, words, music. I have all of my influences reflected in my work. Its almost like I take all the outside ideas and mine put them in an idea grinder and the final product is my work with the essence of my influences. Steal, its fun and it makes life more interesting and honest.
I liked the idea that we don't have to know who we are to create art. Just do it. Fake like you know what you're doing and just make stuff. I always get caught up in the idea of who I am. I think one of the reasons I love my boyfriend so much is because he is the exact opposite. If he likes something, its going to go on his body in tattoo form. It doesn't matter who he is, because he is all of it his ideas or their ideas and he steals everything. It kind of makes me envious...really..who told me I had to know who I am?? I would like to hit that person right now.
Jay-Z talked about not having a father and getting to make his our family. Make it better, bigger, more influences and he had the final say. I love it. And I do it. I surround my self with my self made family of friends, my boyfriend, his daughter. That is my family and they influence me, shape me, move me. I embrace the idea that there are no new ideas. New ideas do not exist. The only thing that we have to do as artists is to find out who to show the ideas to and how to do it and where to do it. Take the pressure to make something original off the table because its all been done. Just find a new way to do it and do it.
I need to stop looking for a job in the art world.
I need to be boring because the stress is killing me and I'm depressed as hell because I don't have time for my side projects, the only art I'm doing these days is in senior studio.....this is a major problem.
Boring jobs, thats what I need.
I loved this post! It was very inspiring and reminded me of how important the little things are. It is the little things that when added up make you successful over the years. Success does not come overnight. One of the points that really stood out to me was the point about "garbage in garbage out." The more you read the more you can choose to be influenced by. This point reminded me that I really do need to start reading more, to broaden my mind and perspective a little bit. I think this will help me to not get so stuck on certain ideas like I tend to do (like my adhd cabinet). The other point I liked was about picking a writer you like and reading everything they read. I had not thought of this before. I think it is a great point because writing is art and there are definitely writers I am sure whose ideas could influence me if I sat down and thought about it.
ReplyDeleteNone of the ideas were that shocking on this post, but they made me think of some things I have not before. Great reading. I am stealing ideas from this post.
